Head of Procurement and Manufacturing

THE CANDIDATE

As part of our continued growth, we are now looking to recruit a Head of Procurement and Manufacturing to join our team based in London.  You will be an exceptional leader with a demonstrable background in Procurement and Manufacturing and a passion for working in scale-up technology companies.  You will be well versed in working with contract manufacturers and OEM’s that execute new products and meet availability dates under tight deadlines and cost constraints. 

Your experience means you are happy to roll your sleeves up and get stuck in, able to identify and negotiate with new suppliers, manufacturers and then mange those relationships on an ongoing basis, always ensuring SAM Labs gets the best value for money whilst ensuring our customers are left delighted with our products and service.

 KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work and negotiate with our current manufacturers (based in EU) and our suppliers to ensure we lower costs throughout the process from the components to the end-product.
  • Introduce new products with accessories, bundles and packaging that require mechanical and electrical engineering input, together with DFM and technical specifications.
  • Ensure we have documentation for the technical specifications of existing and iterated products.
  • Look to build and follow best practices for manufacturing, efficiency optimisation and SOP’s.
  • You’ll implement quality control processes which ensure suppliers are complying with global regulatory, product safety, ethical and compliance standards. You and your team will craft success criteria for quality and safety related to product performance, cost and delivery.
  • Work with governing bodies to get certification on our products for areas such as EU / US / local toy safety and compliance market standards.
  • Play an active role in future product exploration.
  • You’ll act as the pivotal stakeholder between our suppliers, manufacturers and the SAM Labs team.
  • You’ll Develop and implement a comprehensive sourcing strategy and optimise our various manufacturing capabilities pipeline and strategic supply base – Keeping our organisation nimble, cost effective, and efficient.
  • You will “own” the timeline from turn-over from SAM Labs UK until product is shipped.
  • You’ll demonstrate sound business judgment and contribute to the strategic direction of the organisation.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS

  • A proven career in Procurement / Manufacturing from within the toy, robotic or consumer electronics market.
  • Disciplined project management skills – Leading, overseeing and executing a continuous pipeline of new product introductions simultaneously.
  • Broad knowledge and experience with consumer product manufacturing and prototyping processes – from 3D printing, CNC Milling, SLS and Vacuum casting to Plastic Injection Mould Tooling / Moulding, Metal stamping, Machining, and electro-mechanical assemblies including charging solutions, compliance testing, Bluetooth stacks and hardware, audio solutions, cameras, antennas, EM shielding, etc.
  • Broad knowledge and experience with Global Product Safety and Regulatory Standards, and product conformance regulations such as ASTM, CPSIA, EN-71, RoHS, REACH, WEEE, CE, FCC, etc.
  • Experience building a manufacturing capabilities pipeline for new tech products.
  • Understanding and proven ability to integrate complex subsystems into a cost engineered consumer product.
  • Knowledge of the common issues within electromechanical products, especially relative to BLE communications.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills – Able to juggle multiple stakeholders with tight deadlines to meet and costs at the forefront of their minds.
  • Able to travel frequently. Within this role, it will be expected that you travel to our manufacturing partner as well as sourcing other manufacturers and suppliers in low-cost territories such as China.

EDUCATION

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or Industrial Engineering degree.

Product

Hardware Design Engineer

SAM Labs empowers teachers with the most engaging STEAM solution including lesson plans, apps and electronics. Our goal is to inspire every student to discover the fun in coding and creating.

We are on the hunt for an experienced Hardware Design Engineer to join our team. This is a rare opportunity to work at a London edtech startup that combines hardware and software, entertainment ánd education during this exciting and transformational phase of the company’s growth.  Reporting to VP Product, you will play a key role in our team as you will be responsible for maintaining our current portfolio and working on new and exciting products.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain current portfolio of products
  • Design and prototype new products
  • Support manufacturing team
  • Ensure the design can be adequately tested and verified
  • Assist in obtaining product certification   

Requirements

  • Bachelor or Master in Electronic Engineering
  • Understanding of the full life cycle Hardware Design from product development through to manufacturing
  • Knowledge of Analogue/ Digital circuit design
  • Good understanding of electronics manufacturing (design for manufacturing, design for testing)
  • Experience with schematic design, layout design and general PCB practices,
  • Knowledge of EMC considerations in product design
  • Awareness of the certification process
  • Basic programming experience, ideally embedded C.
  • Experience with wireless technologies, BLE preferable
  • Knowledge of Electronic Engineering best practices and common pitfalls

Fullstack NodeJS Developer/Sysadmin

  • Working closely with the operations, marketing, sales and product teams to help improve development integration and deployment across the website, databases and other business solutions
  • Writing new code as well as configuring, monitoring, managing and troubleshooting recurring issues across the current technology stack whilst ensuring and maintaining all documentation

Background:

Product and Interaction Designer

We are looking for an exceptionally passioned Product and Interaction Designer to be part of SAM Lab's product team, building the next generation of physical/digital educational play.

We’ve got extremely exciting products in the making, intersecting physical toys and digital gaming in story-led and immersive experiences, leveraging gamification to teach kids the joys of programming and creativity.

Your key contribution to the product will be developing new experiences working at the junction of Hardware and Software. We are looking for an experienced candidate with a passion for detail and a experience in both the physical and digital world.

You will report into the VP Product and work very closely with Product Owners, UX Designer and the Core Game Team to take the SAM universe to the next level.

Responsibilities

  • Help design the next line of SAM Labs' Products working closely with Product Owners, Hardware and Software engineers.
  • Being involved in the full development cycle from Concept to Manufacturing/Release, taking initiative and interacting with all involved parties.
  • Research and ideate for the creation of new physical and digital experiences as part of the SAM products range.
  • Producing detailed drawings and specifications documents for internal and external use.

We are on the hunt for a passionate SAM Labs Master Trainer to join our team in East London. An exciting opportunity where you will be responsible for supporting SAM Labs’ growing user base across the world; crafting, leading and implementing a training strategy across both Product and CPD.

Responsibilities

  • Establish the appropriate structures and processes to implement a global programme of product training, targeting distributors and teachers, both online and face-to-face
  • Personally deliver product training and teacher professional development to flagship schools, Ministries of Education, corporates and private school chains. (We estimate a 50% travel requirement for this role.)

VP of Sales

Key Account Manager APAC

We are on the hunt for a passionate Key Account Manager to support our global sales team. Based in Hong Kong, you will be responsible for promoting SAM Labs’ growing education portfolio to schools and teachers across the Asia-Pacific region.

This role reports into the Head of APAC.

Responsibilities:

  • Promotion & Representation: promote SAM Labs products to schools across the whole APAC region, targeting substantial sales growth. This includes carrying out extensive visits and product training. It is envisaged that the successful candidate will be on the road for 3 days per week during the sales season – visiting schools and our exclusive distributor (details below); representing SAM Labs at exhibitions, sales conferences, workshop and launch events etc.
  • Distributor relationships: support the Head of APAC to ensure our local distributor is appropriately targeted and supported – with product training, marketing collateral and KPIs.
  • Reporting: compile a biweekly written report summarising sales, visiting activity, product feedback from customers, teacher training requirements, competitor activity, market developments and planned activity for the next period.
  • CRM: Maintain and enhance the SAM Labs database for China. This includes detailed and regular reporting on customer visits.
  • Customer Support: providing best-in-class support to schools using SAM Labs across the APAC region. 
  • Support to the Head of APAC: providing such support as may be required. For example, the Key Account Manager may be called upon to assist in the management of high profile adoptions in China, including at Ministerial level.

Communications Manager

Founded in October 2014, SAM Labs is an award-winning edtech startup in East London which aims to inspire every student to discover the fun in coding and creating.

SAM Labs combines apps, wireless hardware blocks and bespoke education content to teach students to unleash their creative potential. With SAM Labs, create anything from a Twitter-powered car to a motion-powered lightsaber!

You will be part of the Marketing team, working with the VP Marketing to grow and develop the communications strategy of SAM Labs via owned and earned channels (with paid support when needed). You will build, connect and maintain the strategy across press, influencers, social media, email, and events, being SAM Labs’ voice to the public. You will be highly motivated to gain strong coverage and leverage social media to drive awareness and consideration, whilst remaining data-driven and focused on key goals and KPIs. You’ll be incredibly strategic with an innate talent of planning and organisation. You will also be passionate about education and bringing STEAM to every classroom.

Responsibilities

  • Creating and delivering integrated PR and digital communications strategies and campaigns from start to finish, reaching target consumer audiences
  • Creating key messaging and positioning strategies, including copywriting where relevant
  • Creating go-to-market launch strategies alongside key stakeholders to effectively roll out key product launches
  • Seeking out new opportunities whilst managing the communications budget to make strategic decisions to advance the business
  • Conceptualising, drafting and pitching fresh new ideas to press, media and influencers to secure global coverage
  • Building and nurturing relationships with relevant agency partners around the world
  • Building close relationships with media and influencers to create key partnerships for SAM
  • Creating a sustainable social media strategy, working with the Marketing Intern to implement across the following channels: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Medium (you will be concepting and approving everything and will ultimately be responsible for the successful delivery for all owned media)
  • Writing and maintaining the newsletter strategy across both the education and consumer facing sides of the business to promote awareness, retention and/or conversion
  • Writing and editing briefs to the content team to create assets needed throughout various areas of the business

 

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of relevant and proven experience in Communications, PR, Social Media - education experience preferred but not mandatory
  • Excellent writing, presenting, and conversational skills
  • Experience of brand management and communications capacity
  • Experience managing budgets
  • Some experience with analytics and social media tools (Meltwater, Sprout Social, Google Analytics, etc.)
  • Driven by results with exceptional time management skills
  • Equipped with a “can do” attitude and a sense of humour
  • Previous startup experience is a bonus
